Let me first explain the situation. One of the most talked about Hollywood actresses, Kristen Stewart, has cheated on her boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, one of the most talked about Hollywood actors and one who is dubbed as one of the best looking men on the planet. She has cheated on her boyfriend with a middle aged man, Rupert Sanders (married with children), who has never been dubbed as one of the best-looking men on the planet. For some more on the story itself click here.
This K Stew – R Patz “cheating scandal” has much to answer for. Both individuals have been incredibly secretive about the relationship which has intrigued and enchanted so many millions of young people all around the world. Now it has rather uncouthly fallen to pieces in the most public fashion possible. You may well think this is a strange turn of events. Are we expected to take everything as it seems? Doesn’t this all seem a bit too convenient given the nature and timing of the event?
Anyone who is oblivious to the fact that the relationships between the world’s most famous individuals occur often for publicity and career reasons is living firmly up in Cloud Cuckoo Land. Many of the most well-known couples have been matched up with the most clinical precision and even the timing of their child’s birth is scheduled with the impact on sales of their next movie in mind. Intrigue surrounding the lead role in a film can mean the difference between a film taking $100 million and $300 million at the box office – these are big numbers.
Firstly, nothing happens without good, profitable reason. Secondly, if you were followed around by paparazzi all day every day, would you cheat on your boyfriend/wife in an instantly recognisable car out in the open in the middle of LA?
Let’s look at the timing of the event. We all know that the final instalment of the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn: Part 2, is to be released in November. What perfect publicity for its release with the two lead stars embroiled in the scandal. This is the final opportunity for everyone involved to milk it for all it is worth; the fame and the money. Will the couple still be together? Will they be seen on the red carpet? Will Sanders be there? Could a scuffle between Sanders and R Patz break out? It’s all too exciting to bear.
The sequel to the recent Snow White adaptation (which introduced Stewart and Sanders to each other) is also currently in the pipeline. This would-be follow-up had “box office flop” written all over it until a few days ago – now surely it will be produced. Have K Stew and R Patz publicists felt it time to stir things up a bit by throwing some instability in the relationship? It was all going rather swimmingly, wasn’t it? Does Pattinson need to be an eligible bachelor to draw in the crowds? This would make for a great excuse to split. Who put them together in the first place?
And how about the event itself? What is the story that those pictures have to tell? By all accounts there was a degree of passionate kissing going on in Ms Stewart’s car to the point she was described as being “all over” Sanders. There was kissing, cuddling and probably some fondling, but nothing more. It’s in the balance. Enough happened to split both couples but probably not enough for either to be unforgiven. And that, perhaps, is the beauty of the situation. The sincerity and speed of which the apologies came out suggests neither are keen to split from their partners; they almost hit the print before the story did. All outcomes are still possible – who decides what happens next?
So has this all been a very well orchestrated, if petty, publicity stunt? Well timed and well placed. It’s going to increase revenues of any number of forthcoming films by tens of millions of dollars. How many more headlines will the couple now make – together or otherwise? It does seem rather out of character for Stewart – has she given herself a shot at being the leading lady in the movie production of 50 Shades of Grey? There’s a money spinner for you. She’ll have to beat off Emma Watson first.
